Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, but for those living with diabetes, the hot weather requires taking some extra precautions – especially when it comes to foot health. At Yeargain Foot & Ankle in Dallas, TX, we want our patients to stay safe while still making the most of the summer season. Here are our top tips for diabetic foot care during the hot summer months:
Wear Proper Footwear
Avoid going barefoot, even at the beach or pool. Wear breathable, well-fitting shoes to protect your feet from hot surfaces, debris, and injury. Consider moisture-wicking socks to keep feet dry. Diabetic shoes and custom orthotics can provide extra support.
Inspect Feet Daily
Check your feet thoroughly each day for any cuts, sores, blisters, swelling, or changes in color or temperature. Use a mirror to see the bottoms of your feet. Don’t ignore any foot wounds – even minor ones can become infected quickly in diabetics.
Maintain Blood Glucose Levels
Heat can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate more than usual. Monitor your levels closely and stay hydrated with water. Be aware of the symptoms of high and low blood sugar. Keep insulin and other medications away from direct heat and sunlight.
Moisturize and Protect
Apply moisturizer to your feet daily to prevent dry, cracked skin that can let in bacteria. Avoid putting lotion between the toes which can lead to fungal growth. Always apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet if they will be exposed.
Stay Cool and Hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Exercise in the cooler morning or evening hours. Rest and elevate feet if they swell in the heat. Recognize the warning signs of heat exhaustion like heavy sweating, rapid pulse, and dizziness.
