Flat Feet Pain Relief in Dallas: How Custom Orthotics Helped an International Athlete Get Back on Her Feet

If you have flat feet, you already know that the ache does not stay in one place. It starts in your arches, creeps into your ankles, settles into your heels, and by the end of a long day it can feel like your whole lower body is paying the price. Many people live with it for years, assuming it is simply how their feet are built and that nothing can be done.

At Yeargain Foot & Ankle, we hear that story often, and we are always glad to be able to change it. One of our patients, an international athlete who depends on her feet at the highest level, came to us after decades of flat foot pain. Her experience is a good illustration of what the right treatment can do.

★★★★★  Verified Patient Review

“I have been having issues with my flat feet for decades, and as an international athlete that relies on my feet, I needed relief. I’ve been going to Yeargain for a year and a half, and I have had good results so far. The service is stellar, and they get you in and out fairly quickly, addressing all of your concerns. I got a shoe orthotic that I thought was not going to help, but as soon as I started using them, I felt relief in my tired, achy arches, my ankles, and my heel immediately.”

What Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches or pes planus, occur when the arch on the inside of the foot flattens out, allowing the entire sole to make contact with the ground when you stand. Some people are born with flat feet and never develop symptoms. Others develop them over time as the tendons and ligaments that support the arch gradually stretch and weaken.

The condition itself is common. The pain that can come with it is what brings patients through our doors.

Common Symptoms of Flat Feet

  • Tired, aching arches, especially after standing or walking for long periods
  • Heel pain or pain along the inside of the ankle
  • Ankle instability or a feeling that your foot rolls inward when you walk or run
  • Swelling along the inside of the ankle
  • Knee, hip, or lower back discomfort caused by altered gait mechanics
  • Uneven shoe wear, with the inner edge of the sole wearing down faster

Why Flat Feet Hit Athletes Especially Hard

For athletes, flat feet are not just uncomfortable. They are a performance problem. Every stride, jump, pivot, and landing sends force through the arch, and when that arch collapses rather than absorbing and redistributing the load, the surrounding structures take on work they were never designed to do.

Over time, that can lead to overuse injuries, chronic arch and heel pain, Achilles tendon strain, shin splints, and ankle instability. Athletes also tend to train through discomfort, which means small mechanical problems have a long runway to become significant ones.

The patient whose review appears above dealt with flat foot pain for decades before finding relief. That is not unusual, and it is also not necessary. Effective, non-surgical treatment is available, and for most patients it starts with a proper evaluation.

How We Treat Flat Feet at Yeargain Foot & Ankle

At Yeargain Foot & Ankle, we always begin with the most conservative approach that can realistically resolve your symptoms. For flat feet, that typically includes:

  • Custom orthotics to support the arch and correct foot mechanics
  • Footwear guidance to make sure your daily and athletic shoes are working with you rather than against you
  • Targeted stretching and strengthening for the calf, Achilles, and supporting foot muscles
  • Activity modification during flare-ups, particularly for athletes in season
  • Anti-inflammatory measures such as icing and topical NSAIDs to manage acute pain

Surgery is rarely the first conversation for flat feet, and for the majority of our patients it never becomes necessary at all.

Custom Orthotics: Why They Work

Custom orthotics are prescription shoe inserts designed from measurements of your specific foot structure. Rather than simply adding cushioning, they are built to control how your foot moves through each step, supporting the arch, limiting excessive inward rolling, and distributing pressure more evenly across the foot.

That distinction matters, because it explains why patients often feel relief so quickly. When the arch is properly supported, the muscles and tendons that had been compensating finally get to stop working overtime.

Custom Orthotics vs. Over-the-Counter Inserts

Drugstore insoles can help mild, occasional soreness, and there is nothing wrong with trying them. But they are manufactured to an average foot, not yours. They cushion, and cushioning alone does not correct mechanics.

Custom orthotics are built from your measurements to address your specific arch height, gait pattern, and symptoms. For patients with long-standing flat feet, and especially for athletes putting repeated high loads through the foot, that difference is usually the difference between temporary comfort and lasting relief.

It is also worth noting how many patients arrive skeptical. As the review above puts it, the expectation going in was that the orthotic was not going to help. The relief came immediately once it was in the shoe. We hear versions of that regularly, and it is one of the more satisfying parts of this work.

What to Expect at Your Visit

A flat foot evaluation at Yeargain Foot & Ankle is straightforward. Your doctor will discuss your symptoms and history, examine your feet and ankles while standing and in motion, and assess how your arch behaves under load. On-site X-rays are available when imaging is needed to evaluate bone structure and alignment.

If custom orthotics are appropriate, we will take the measurements needed to have them made for you and walk you through how to break them in. From there, we will follow up to make sure they are doing their job and adjust the plan if anything needs refining.

Our patients consistently tell us that we respect their time, addressing every concern thoroughly without leaving them waiting. That is by design, and it matters especially to athletes and busy professionals who cannot spend half a day at a doctor’s office.

When to See a Podiatrist About Flat Feet

Consider scheduling an evaluation if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Arch, heel, or ankle pain that persists beyond a few weeks
  • Pain that limits your training, work, or daily activity
  • Recurring lower body injuries that may be linked to foot mechanics
  • Symptoms that have not improved with rest, stretching, or over-the-counter inserts
  • A visible change in the shape or arch of your foot

Flat feet do not have to be something you simply manage for decades. In many cases, the fix is far simpler than patients expect.
